Spa Techniques To Add To Your Practice
One of the newest trends in massage therapy is adding spa techniques to your massage practice.
This can give you added income as well as new clients who hear about your services from current clients who brag to their friends about the great spa service you provide.
Skin care is big business these days from expensive lotions to day spa treatments. Massage therapists can smooth the skin with a salt glow and also with a body polish. Both treatments will exfoliate the skin and leave it feeling soft and smooth.
So what are some services that you can add to your massage therapy business? One of the easiest spa techniques to add is
the paraffin wax treatment.
My favorite is the scented paraffin wax hand treatment. A paraffin treatment can also be done without the scent, if the client prefers. Either way, a paraffin treatment leaves the hands and feet feeling soft and smelling fabulous for hours. This treatment is great for treating joint pain as well.
You will need a commercial wax bath, paraffin wax, terry cloth booties and mittens, and sanitizer to clean the warmer with.
You can treat the hands, feet, and elbows. Paraffin wax is great for relieving the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. It is also great for relaxation and smoothing of the skin.
You can purchase supplies for paraffin treatments for about $225. You can charge $10 to $20 for each area you work on. Maybe you could offer a discount if the client has two or three of these areas treated. If you do not have your own massage office, a paraffin bath is easily transported.
Another of the spa techniques that is easy to add to your practice, even if it is mobile, is hot stone massage.
Take a hot stone class and get certified to
perform hot stone massage
first if you have not already done so.
Rocks, a warmer, and cleanser can be purchased for around $200 from massage supply companies. You will also need a thermometer. It is very important to know exactly how hot the rocks are. You do not want to burn your client.
You can give a hot stone massage from 60 to 90 minutes for between $60 and $100. Or you can incorporate some hot stone massage in with a regular table massage and charge $10 to $20 additional.
Body wraps are good spa techniques to add to your practice, but they are not portable. Too messy for outcalls. This should only be done in your massage office. You will need to buy about 24 ace bandages and herbs that are pre-mixed and sold by massage therapy and spa supply companies. You will also need muslin bags to put the herbs in to soak the ace bandages.
Soak them in your hot stone warmer. Wrap the client on the massage table. Then he/she should be covered with a blanket so the client can sweat out impurities for about 40 minutes.
Allow the client to rest in a dimly lit room with relaxing music playing. Make sure that you check on the client a few times during the sweating period to make sure he/she is okay. Then unwrap the client. CAUTION: Women who are pregnant should never get a body wrap.
You can charge $45 to $75 for body wraps.
Body scrubs such as
sugar or salt glows
or the ever-popular
body polish treatments
are also good spa techniques to add but due to the messiness, it is not portable. Charge an extra $25 to $40.
Mud treatments
can cost $40 to $100 and should only be performed as spa techniques in your office.
Thai herbal compresses are another of the spa techniques you should add. Charge about $25 for this.
For your office or as part of your outcall practice, consider purchasing a steam canopy system by Steamy Wonder for around $1400. It is quite an investment but it comes with a case so you can fold and carry it with your table. It fits on top of your massage table. You will need to purchase special velcro sheets that Steamy Wonder sells. (No, I don't get a cut...I am just providing you with helpful information!) The velcro seals the heat in on the massage table. The client's neck and head stay out of the canopy.
This canopy plugs into a regular outlet and uses a small amount of water that you pour into it. It does not need to be hooked up to a water supply. You can charge around $100 for a steam. That can include applying mud or herbal wraps to the client for the steam.
You should probably wait a while before you make an investment this expensive, until you have a good client base. Also, do not charge items on credit. Save up and pay cash for everything you buy. That way, you will not be in debt.
