Seated Chair Massage Instruction
There was nothing on seated chair massage instruction during my massage classes in Texas.
Massage therapy schools in some states include this in their basic massage therapy program but Texas does not. The only way to get it is to wait for a continuing education class at a nearby massage school. It is usually offered a few times a year at each school. I did not want to wait for months and months.
I had seen chair massage done at the mall and in coffee shops. I was quite disappointed not to learn it in school. Massage therapists were getting $2 a minute for chair massage where I live and I wanted in on that!(Do the math--60 minutes in an hour x $2=$120 an hour--ka-ching!)
So I went to the bookstore and found some books on the subject and read them, studying the photos in the books intently. I bought a massage chair and convinced friends to let me practice on them.
I also found some seated chair massage instruction DVDs on the internet that sounded like they would be helpful. I ordered them and watched them over and over, memorizing the movements of the therapist--not just the therapist's hands, but their whole body, where they put their feet and how they shifted their body while they performed the chair massage.
The Ralph Stephens DVDs on chair massage were especially helpful. I bought some and watched them over and over, learning how to practice therapeutic seated massage on my clients. Ralph Stephens is an excellent teacher. Get some of his instructional DVDs. You will learn a ton!
I practiced again and again until I moved the way the therapist in the DVD moved. My friends were enjoying being the clients so I got a lot of practice.
Then, my massage school finally offered a weekend chair massage class so I signed up and earned my chair massage certification. I got more written material there and plenty of practice. It turns out that I actually learned more from the DVDs than from the class. I learned the basic massage routine for seated chair massage in class and got to practice it on the other students. They, in turn, practiced it on me as well.
