Massage Therapy Business Liability Insurance

You should purchase massage therapy business liability insurance in order to protect your personal interests if you are not incorporated, or your business interests if you are.

Business liability is also known as premise liability. Its purpose is to cover any costs that you are responsible for if your client gets hurt or if his/her personal property is damaged while he/she is on your property, either at your home or your office.

Some massage therapists run their business out of their home. If a client gets hurt in your home, your homeowner's policy will not cover this because the client is there for business purposes and not as your guest. If the client sues you as a result of injury while on your property, business liability will take care of treating the injury, plus protect you against lawsuits. It will pay out judgments against you as well as settlement costs.

For example, it is winter and the steps leading up to your front door are icy. You forgot to sand or salt them down this morning. Your first client starts up the stairs, not bothering to hold onto the railing. She falls, hits her mouth on an icy, concrete step, and knocks out a tooth. She will definitely want the tooth fixed. She may just want you to pay her dental costs, but she could also sue you for damages as well.

Example number two: your client parks her brand new jaguar in your driveway. There is a bit of a windstorm while she is receiving her massage inside your massage room. The dying tree that you have been meaning to have cut down gets blown over--right on top of your client's jag! Do you think she will say, "Don't worry about it!"? I don't think so. Can you afford to pay for a brand new jaguar? Most massage therapists are not that well off.

Or what if the neighbor boy hits his baseball right through the windshield of that beautiful jag? The jaguar was parked on your property making you responsible for the cost of repairing the jag. Again, your home owner's insurance is not going to pay for your business expense. Your client is a business expense, not your personal guest. Read your homeowner's policy.

My point is protect yourself with the proper massage therapy business liability insurance and you will not have to worry about silly accidents.

In all three of the cases above, you will be responsible for all damages unless you have massage therapy business liability insurance. Don't forget to get professional liability coverage as well. Do not confuse the two types of coverage. You need them both. It is a wise policy to have both types of coverage to protect your bank account and your personal belongings. Make sure that you get both massage liability insurance and business liability coverage prior to allowing any clients on your property.

You may never need either policy, but it is good to know they are there if anything bad ever happens.
