Massage Therapy Books
If you are going to become a massage therapist, you will want to invest in some more massage therapy books. This page has some suggestions for a few to include in your library.
Massage A Career At Your Fingertips
If you are planning to become a massage therapist, you need Massage A Career At Your Fingertips, written by Martin Ashley.
He is a practicing massage therapist and an attorney so he brings a unique perspective to the profession of massage therapist.
He discusses practicing as a male therapist and as an attorney and has thoroughly covered every legal aspect of the profession of massage therapy.
This book is filled with information about everything you need to know about massage school, massage associations, insurance, publications, setting up your practice, and so much more.
This massage book candidly talks about what you can expect to earn as a massage therapist and about what it takes for you to be successful in the field of massage therapy.
The author covers laws and requirements that each state has. He gives a state by state directory listing different schools. There is also information on the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
Also included is a section on ethics and one on licensing. Tips on how to market yourself are provided.
I got this book about three years ago and it has been an invaluable resource for me. I suggest that if you get just one massage book, this is the one to choose.
The A To Z Of Essential Oils
The book, The A To Z Of Essential Oils by E. Joy Bowles is a great beginner's book on aromatherapy.
Do you love to walk into an office and smell a wonderful aromatherapy candle burning? Do you enjoy scented lotions? Those scents are created with essential oils.
Maybe you briefly touched on the topic during massage school. In our class, we spoke of them very briefly and that was that. No demonstrations, nothing. There was a blurb about them in our textbook. I read about them in a massage magazine and then got some books about them.
This book is a great place to start learning about the art of aromatherapy and how you can combine scents with massage therapy.
The publisher has filled with the pages with beautiful full-color photos of the plants, flowers, fruits, and spices that provide us with these natural, plant-based oils. It also lists both the common names and the Latin names of each of the oils it talks about.
There is information about each scent of the 58 different oils reviewed in this book. It tells how they are harvested, what oils work best for different conditions and body parts, and why they work.
I learned a lot from this book for use in my massage therapy practice. I think it is a must-have if you want to combine aromatherapy practice with your massage therapy practice and do the right thing for each of your clients.
This book will make a wonderful gift for new massage therapists and beginning aromatherapists. The photography is up close and detailed so you can recognize the plants when you see them. This alone is reason to buy this book. The charts are great as well.
The 58 oils reviewed in the book are discussed in great detail. Each one gets two pages, not just a quick mention like in some massage therapy books I have read.
Business Mastery
Business Mastery by Cherie M. Sohnen-Moe is a textbook written specifically for professionals who provide wellness care to clients.
Most massage therapy books do not provide enough business information for the therapist who will go into practice for him/herself. Massage schools do not give enough training for this either.
The author of this book gives everything you need for the business aspects of being a massage therapist. This is one of the massage therapy books that is great for massage therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors, physicians,.....
The author is a former massage practitioner so she knows the business side of how to run a wellness practice from planning to finances to providing customer service aimed to please.
There are ten information-packed chapters in this textbook, along with a ton of sample forms and worksheets included in the appendix.
Marketing, business startup, management, and finances are all discussed at length and in great detail.
Communicating skills and excellent customer service can be learned from the author's experiences.
Each chapter is filled with tips, charts, and skill builders designed to help the student put a practice together, step by step.
If you are going into business for yourself, this textbook should be in your library. Refer to it often.

Dictionary
Don't forget a good medical dictionary such as Taber's to help you with the names of diagnoses that clients say they have according to their physician. Remember that some of these may not allow massage therapy until they are resolved or treated with medications. These conditions are called contraindications to massage. Make sure you pick up a great dictionary to add to your massage therapy books.
Massage Therapy Principles and Practice
Massage Therapy Principles and Practice by Susan G. Salvo is the textbook used by my massage school in 2004.
We used the first edition of this fabulous textbook. Prior to my class, the school used two textbooks. One was on massage techniques and the other was on anatomy and physiology. But Ms. Salvo combines the two and gives so much more throughout the book. There are articles in each chapter about famous people in massage therapy and related fields. There are sample tests and worksheets. Sample forms are included as well.
Now the second edition is out and it comes with a CD-ROM about anatomy and physiology that I wish I had when I was in massage school.
This textbook covers it all--long chapters on anatomy and physiology detailing each individual body system. The muscle section is excellent and has great illustrations.
There are a lot of good photos throughout each chapter and lots of helpful illustrations, too. The book includes an extensive glossary.
This is the only textbook you need. It includes a business section for your business needs. The hydrotherapy section discusses thirty different spa treatments. It also includes a complete chapter on chair massage.
As you can see, there are many massage therapy books for you to add to your library. The good news is that more massage therapy books are published every year, about many aspects of this exciting career.
